67th EE BAFTA Awards Live Blog

Bonjour! It’s time again to sit and type frantically as famous people in nice clothes step up and take awards (and occasionally cry). And much the same as last time: “due to wordpress being a tad odd, you’ll have to press F5 every now again to refresh for the latest update wit and brilliance from me *cough*. But in all seriousness I’ll be updating you all of the winner’s and losers and so forth and so forth” (I’m quoting me, by the way. Lazy git, I know). ENJOY.

22:56

22:46

Reasons I like Prince William – 3 jokes have been made about him so far and he doesn’t care, he’s still happy and hey, he’s presenting the Fellowship award (with Jeremy Irons). Dame Helen Mirren – an “intrinsically sexy” history from Jeremy Irons in a fab velvet dinner jacket. (Oh yeah, she played William’s Granny – Bless ‘im). I could understand you not knowing Mr Greenaway but 11 times nominated Dame? You’re nuts.

You’ll know her for Elizabeth I, The Queen, Red (And Red 2), Monsters Uni, The Debt, Excalibur  Gosford Park, Arthur and Hitchcock (to name a few). If not then here’s a photo of her face:

A charming analogy and note from Dearest Helen to remember and thank those teachers that inspired us, be it a long time ago or just last week. Lastly, of course, a warm and hearty thanks to  everyone that’s ever helped her and us.

A monologue from the great lady as her final reminder that she bloody well deserves this.

22:41

Best film presentation to come from…someone German…someone in Inglorious Bastards… oh! It’s Christoph Waltz! Absolute fave!

Nominations: 12 Years a Slave, Philomena, American Hustle, Gravity, Captain Phillips

Winner: 12 Years a Slave. All I’ll say is what I just said aloud and what my mother said aloud “Yes” and “Good”. Basically, I would’ve thrown a table like a meme if it didn’t win. Hard hitting fact for your thoughts – 21 million are still in slavery.

22:34

Shia LaBeouf burn from Fry (quite right) and hello to Tom Hardy (the attractive, if inaudible, voice of Bane and Ricky Tar) whilst presenting Lead actress

Nominations: Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks, Amy Adams for American Hustle, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena (for which they used a great clip)

Winner: Cate Blanchett – a thoroughly stunning and no-crap-taking actress who has amazing dress sense. “God I’m unfit”. Lovely tribute to Phillip Seymour Hoffman, a lot of sad faces. He really was undoubtedly one of the greats. “Phil, buddy, this is for you, you bastard, I hope you’re proud”

22:29

In honour of the talent that was David Lean; Best Director award. Now to be presented by Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Sheen. Maggie and Michael take directing back to basics – the dreamers and the artists.

Nominations: Paul Greengrass for Captain Phillips, Steve McQueen, David O’ Russell for American Hustle, Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street

Winner: Alfonso Cuaron. Gravity win count = 3 so far. Sandra Bullock needs more praise. Not even just for Gravity, lest we forget Miss Congeniality or Two Weeks Notice. Where were here BAFTAs then, huh? #jokingagain

22:23

I love Uma Thurman…Leading Actor, what?

Nominations: Christian Bale for American Hustle, Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave (Lord let him have it), Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips, Leonardo Dicaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street

Winner: Chiwetel Ejiofor. Thank God. No objections here, there or anywhere. Good one you son, praise even from his competitors. Aw, Brad Pitt looks so happy. IT’S ALL CUTE.

22:22

Best film highlights: Gravity

It’s about choosing life and what we fight for when we have nothing left to fight for.

22:16

The bit I hate the most: Memorial time, we lost a lot of good ones this year…
Shirley Temple, Joan Fontaine, Elmore Leonard, Saul Zaentz, Julie Harris, Ray Dolby, Graham Stark, Stephenie McMillan, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Eileen Brennan, Ray Harryhausen, David Campling, Maximillain Schelf, Esther Williams, Jean Kent, Gerry Hambling, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Vic Hammond, Eleanor Parker, Bryan Forbes, Anwar Brett, Dir Run Run Shaw, Deanna Durbin, Antonia Bird, Peter O’ Toole (and I know I missed one, I will find him. I promise).

I don’t care about Gravity’s film highlights, I want to appreciate these incredible beings. Oh, we lose too many people. The world won’t be the same without them, it never is. We must never forget them and always remember all the hard work and passion they put into our enjoyment, our entertainment and our lives.

22:10

He corrected the writers’ grammar again.
EE Rising Star award is up next, to be presented by ” a woman so swedish, she comes flat-packed”, Alicia Vikander, and Eddie Redmayne

Nominations: Lea Seydoux, George Mackay, Luptia Nyong’o, Dane DeHaan, Will Poulter

Winner: Will Poulter. Voted for by the public, you did good public, you did good. He’s way more suave in real life, poor boy having to play the weird kid all the time – but he is good at it. He forgot Dane’s name but it’s okay because he loves his work. Amazing.

22:05

Best Adapted Screenplay by the wondrous Amy Adams

Nominations: The Wolf of Wall Street by Terrence Winter, Captain Phillips by Billy Ray (not to be confused with Billy Ray Cyrus), 12 Years a Slave by John Ridley, Behind the Candelabra by Richard LaGravenese, Philomena by Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope

Winner: Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope for Philomena. Well a resounding yay just went through my living room. GOOD. Philomena was amazing and everyone just forgot about it because it was a gentle film.  IT STILL BROKE MY HEART (and warmed it).

22:02

Best Film highlights: 12 Years a Slave

By the sounds of it, McQueen and Ridley are the best director and writer team ever. The cast are so fabulous and they really do care about this film and this story. Makes me happy – no the film, the film made me incurably sad.

Facial hair award for the two stunners sat next to one another: Fassbender and Ejiofor

21:57

Stanley Tucci (amazing man) is here to present the award for Original Screenplay.

Nominations: Nebraska by Bob Nelson, Blue Jasmine by Woody Allen, Gravity by Alfonso and Jonás Cuaron, American Hustle by Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell, Inside Llewyn Davis by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Winner: Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russel for American Hustle. One of my favourite songs ever is playing as they take to the stage (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – Elton John from the soundtrack). “I was breastfed from a very early age on British cinema” – EWS

And Stephen Fry corrected their grammar (I hope he doesn’t correct mine). Oh! And a kiss was shared!

21:50

Phone-hacking joke. History about… Juliette Stephenson who’s here to present… Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema for Peter Greenaway. Fabulous.

Peter Greenaway montage! Have some history: Greenaway trained as a painter and began working as a film editor for the Central Office of Information in 1965. Shortly afterwards he started to make his own films. He has produced a wealth of short and feature-length films, but also paintings, novels and other books. You may know him for The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, The Pillow Book, The Draughtsman’s Contract or Drowing by Numbers. He’s been making films for over thirty years so there’ll be something you’ll recognize. Have a look at his IMDb page.

21:47

Best Film Highlights: Philomena

Again, lovely to hear how involved and fascinated in the the story Dench and Coogan are. A reminder that the film is actually an overall joyful film. Team Dench.

21:43

Fry made a Charlie Sheen Joke.
LEONARDO *screams LEO I LOVE YOU.
He’s doing Leading Actresses by the way…

Nominations: Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle, Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine, Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave, Julia Roberts for August: Osage County, Oprah Winfrey for The Butler

Winner: Jennifer Lawrence. Go JLaw. Damn it she’s not here! She’s beautiful though and they’re playing Don’t Leave Me This Way – fab.

21:29

Cinematography to be presented by Helen McCrory and Ray Winstone . McCrory looks fantastic for her age, and Winstone is as good as always.

Nominations: Gravity, Inside Llewyn Davis, 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Nebraska

Winner: Gravity, oh look it’s Cuaron again. I don’t know, Gravity was more editing and effects than filming. I don;t know… it’s not like they went to space #highexpectations #joking

21:35

Best Film Highlights: Captain Phillips (“also known as Saving Mr. Hanks”). Stephen Fry is on top, top form tonight.

It’s always nice to see stars talk about their films and even more so when, like Hanks, they are genuinely interested and passionate about their film and the story and characters behind it.

21:30

Supporting Actor to be presented by the incredible Emma Thompson. Lovely tribute from Mr. Fry there.

Nominations: Daniel Bruhl for Rush, Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips, Matt Damon for Behind the Candelabra, Michael Fassbender for 12 Years a Slave, Bradley Cooper for American Hustle

Winner: Barkhad Abdi. Okay then, that is a surprise, not because he was bad, he was a amazing, but Fassbender…or Bruhl. Well he’s been received incredibly. Tom Hanks is looking at him like his son has just won a BAFTA. Oh and there’s a thanks, cute.

21:25

Outstanding debut for British producer/writer/director being presented by Steve Coogan… Nice little complement to Mr. Fry as the great host that he is, followed by a few in jokes.

Nominations: Kieran Evans for Kelly + Victor, Paul Wright and Polly Stokes for For Those in Peril, Kelly Marcel for Saving Mr. Banks, Scott Graham for Shell, Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson for Good Vibrations

Winner: Kieran Evans for Kelly + Victor. Phwoar, this poor bloke is out of breath. It’s not that big an opera house! Kidding, congrats to Evans for making so much out of very little. We also have the first family-thanker of the night.

21:22

Best Film Highlights: American Hustle

Highlighting the American Hustle soundtrack – I Feel Love by Donna Summer and 10538 Overture by ELO. Also showing off the costumes which really were stunning.

21:21

Traditions of BAFTA: Stephen Fry getting tipsy and Amy Adams looking fantabulous.

21:17

Good, next award up for animated film is to be presented by Gillian Anderson and David Oyelowo. Gillian looks incredible. That woman doesn’t age.

Nominations: Frozen, Mosnters University and Despicable Me 2

Winner: Frozen. Well deserved, I still haven’t stopped listening to the sountdrack and I am still happy with how good that film was. Apparently John Lasseter sang Let it Go a lot pretending to be a lady.

21:12

Oprah (*sings operatically*) is presenting Outstanding British Film:

Nominations: Rush, The Selfish Giant, Philomena, Gravity, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Saving Mr. Banks

Winner: Gravity. I’m sorry, Gravity, you’re not a British film. You’re fab but you’re not a British film at heart. Also David Heyman has a stupid voice, stop talking. Now.

21:11

“Usually when you are given something, say a cup of tea, it is customary to say thank you. You do not tend to go on to thank the kettle and the cup…” – Stephen Fry

“The Butler was so good, I nearly gave mine the afternoon off” – Stephen Fry

21:09

Film montage to live music from Tinie Tempah (got to love him, he just high-fived the second in line for the throne). Very good montage – kudos to whoever made it.

21:06

Emma Thompson stuck two fingers up at the camera and ANGELINA JOLIE LOOKS FANTASTIC. Oh! Stephen Fry made a joke about William, oh. Cheeky beggar.

21:02

Well Stephen Fry (although still rocking the Malvolio beard) looks very slim and well dressed.  And straight off the mark with two crackers. So complementary and all. “I wish it  could have been 24 years a slave, in the nicest way..if there was a nice way to say it”. “We would love you to blow a kiss to the camera Leo, we drew lots until your name came up”. He’s too quick for me, this man, amazing.

21:00

WHO LOOKS FINE:
Leonardo DiCaprio
Lupita Nyong’o
Uma Thurman
Ruth Wilson
Eddie Redmayne
Samantha Banks
Um, Prince William? Nice to see you, too…
Christian  Bale
Chiwetel Ejiofor (Work that facial hair)
Cate Blanchett

20:19

Kind of annoyed – why? You don’t care but I’m telling you anyway! (Don’t worry it’s relevant). So the BBC have posted an article to the front page of their News site revealing the winners of each award, I mean talk about spoilers. The show will be aired in under an hour for everyone to see who won and to WATCH THE BAFTAS TO SEE WHO WINS. Equally Empire online have done the same but they are a film magazine. It just feels a bit defeatist as a blogger and as a happy viewer of the awards show to bother. I could just Google it?! I haven’t read it all because I don’t want to know. Anyway I guess if you’re attending the BAFTA’s you’re a bit more special than me sat at home but it is a tad inconsiderate. Whatever. Just saying. Restrain and refrain! I will update you with pictures and things occasionally and that’s more fun, surely? Thanks if you do read this by the way, it takes a lot of fast typing…and snacks.

19:41

In red are the ones I would like to win,  there are various films I would be happy to win but I’ve picked one from each (fair and all – although saying that I can’t decide between Brhul and Fassbender for supporting). Also if there are none highlighted, I’m either not bothered or I haven’t seen the films…
